    What’s Important

In March 2016, thirty-six-year-old Adam LaRoche, the first baseman for the Chicago White Sox professional baseball team in the US, resigned after he was told not to bring his fourteen-year-old son into the team’s clubhouse as often as had been his practice. LaRoche walked away from a $13-million contract. Simply put, he refused to place money or fame before family. He announced his retirement in a tweet that read, “Thank u Lord for the game of baseball and for giving me way more than I ever deserved! #FamilyFirst.”

    Do You Really Love Him?

If what we call love doesn’t take us beyond ourselves, it is not really love. If we have the idea that love is characterized as cautious, wise, sensible, shrewd, and never taken to extremes, we have missed the true meaning. This may describe affection and it may bring us a warm feeling, but it is not a true and accurate description of love.

Have you ever been driven to do something for God not because you felt that it was useful or your duty to do so, or that there was anything in it for you, but simply because you love Him?

    The Discipline of Hearing

Sometimes God puts us through the experience and discipline of darkness to teach us to hear and obey Him. Song birds are taught to sing in the dark, and God puts us into “the shadow of His hand” until we learn to hear Him (Isaiah 49:2). “Whatever I tell you in the dark. . .”— pay attention when God puts you into darkness, and keep your mouth closed while you are there. Are you in the dark right now in your circumstances, or in your life with God? If so, then remain quiet. If you open your mouth in the dark, you will speak while in the wrong mood— darkness is the time to listen.

Becoming a safe place for others

I’ll bet every one of us hid under the covers when we were kids. We were looking for a safe place, but today on Discover the Word, special guest Ann Voskamp shows us how can we become a safe place for others. Ann Voskamp joins the team at the table right here on Discover the Word!

    Painful Words

My daughter and I were savoring a school musical performance we’d just witnessed while walking to our car. Our happiness came to a screeching halt, however, as we watched a man approach a waiting vehicle and denigrate the driver for failing to pull forward far enough into the student loading zone. The diatribe was brief, but painful, particularly because it took place in the context of Christian community.

5 Reasons You Should Repent – Again and Again

As believers, we know that Jesus calls people who have yet to believe in Him (Matthew 4:17) and Christians to repent when they have fallen away from Him (Revelation 2:5; 2:16; 2:21; 3:3; 3:19).

    Love as a “roof”

Today on Discover the Word, special guest Ann Voskamp is at the table with the team, to talk about one of Jesus’s most important statements. Discover what that statement is, and why Ann finds the image of love as a “roof” so encouraging. Don’t miss today on Discover the Word!

God often answers our prayers in unexpected ways

When 2017 Starts Off on the Wrong Foot

I blame it on the two cups of tea and one cup of coffee I had earlier that day. Though it was almost 2am, my mind was still active and raring to go.

What do you do when God is not answering your prayer?

We all respond differently to stress. Some exercise or clean the house,  while others crash on the sofa and get lost in sports or a movie. What do you do when you’re stressed and waiting to hear from God? We’ll see what Habakkuk did, today on Discover the Word, as the team continues our discussion […]

A memorable image to help you keep praying

When we’re expecting to hear from someone, it’s easy to get anxious, checking our email continually or glancing at our phone to see if they’ve texted or called. We expect them to answer soon, and we don’t want to miss it. Today on Discover the Word, the team will discuss how prayer can be like […]

    When God says “wait”

The Internet has given us an appetite for immediacy! So, what do we do when God seems to say, “Wait”? Today on Discover the Word,  we continue a study in the book of Habakkuk, looking into a period in Israel’s history when prayer didn’t seem to make much difference. Listen today to Discover the Word!

    Famous in God’s Eyes

The Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis is one of my all-time favorite books. A fictional account about the narrator’s trip to hell and heaven, I love the imagery and the lessons we can glean about what is and what’s not truly important. At one point on his journey deeper and deeper into the heavenly landscape, the narrator notices a huge parade. Musicians, girls, boys, and all sorts of animals are parading in honor of a lady of great renown.

    When God seems silent

We know that prayer is a conversation but what do we do when God seems silent and it seems like we’re doing all the talking? The Bible tells us to wait on the Lord. But for how long? Today on Discover the Word, we continue a study in the book of Habakkuk. “Major Prayers from […]

Have you ever felt like your prayers are hitting the ceiling? Well, you’re not alone. Today on Discover the Word, we will talk about prayer from a part of the Bible you might not turn to very often.
